The Madras High Court has stated that the Indian marriage system should emerge from the shadow of male chauvinism and progress with equality and mutual respect. Because marriage does not give men undisputed rights over their wives. Husbands should not mistake a woman's patience for consent.
Justice L. Victoria Gowri's bench was hearing a case related to a matrimonial dispute between an elderly couple married in 1965. The petition was filed by a woman whose husband was convicted of cruelty towards his wife under Section 498A of the IPC.
