Kalinga (the ancient name for coastal Odisha) was a major maritime power, known for extensive overseas trade and cultural exchange with Southeast Asia and beyond from approximately the 7th century BCE to the 13th century CE. Its maritime success was driven by skilled merchants and a sophisticated understanding of seafaring. This maritime activity played a significant role in spreading Kalingan culture, religion, and ideas across Asia.
