CLIMATE-COP30

FORMATS: Alternate Headlines, Text, Photo, Video

10. WITH: CLIMATE COP30

11. DESCRIPTION: Scores of world leaders will descend on a poor Brazilian city on the edge of the Amazon to try to curb climate change and the deforestation that accelerates it. They will kick of UN climate negotiations, but this 30th climate conference is different not just because of where it’s being held but the leaders summit will likely miss the presidents of the top two or three polluting nations. As nations are supposed to strengthen their pollution-cutting efforts, there’s a bit of a change in who’s taking charge in the fight that has North-South justice issues. And even though Brazil is a big fossil fuel country, it’s a different vibe than past ones where oil producing nations literally set the agenda.

Philippine air force helicopter carrying 5 crashes while en route to help in typhoon response

SUMMARY: A Philippine air force helicopter with five personnel on board has crashed in the country’s south while flying to help respond to the devastation wrought by Typhoon Kalmaegi. The storm has already left at least five people dead and set off floodings that trapped on roofs in some central villages. The Super Huey chopper crashed near Loreto town in southern Agusan del Sur province on Tuesday and efforts were underway to locate the air force personnel aboard, the military’s Eastern Mindanao Command said in a statement. Military officials did not immediately provide other details about the crash, including the condition of the five air force personnel aboard.

SUMMARY: Rescuers in Nepal are digging through ice and snow on Mount Yalung Ri to recover the bodies of seven climbers killed by an avalanche. The avalanche hit the base camp on Monday morning, but snowstorms delayed rescue efforts. Improving weather allowed a helicopter to reach the site on Tuesday. Four injured climbers have been flown to Kathmandu for treatment. Among the survivors is Isabelle Solange Thaon, who lost her husband in the avalanche. Two Nepali mountain guides are confirmed dead, while the identities of the remaining victims are unclear. At least three bodies have been recovered so far.

Israel hands over bodies of 45 Palestinians after Hamas returns the remains of 3 soldiers

SUMMARY: Israel has returned the bodies of 45 Palestinians, according to the Red Cross. It comes a day after militants returned the remains of three Israeli soldiers killed in a Hamas-led attack in October 2023. The exchange is part of a U.S.-brokered ceasefire aimed at ending the conflict between Israel and Hamas. Since the truce began in October, Palestinian militants have released the remains of 20 hostages, with eight still in Gaza. For each Israeli hostage returned, Israel has been releasing the remains of 15 Palestinians, totaling 270 since the ceasefire started.

Kim Yong Nam served as head of the Supreme People’s Assembly from 1998 to April 2019. That post is North Korea’s nominal head of state, though the true power was held by the Kim family that has ruled the North since 1948.

US--TRUMP-THE LATEST

The Latest: Trump administration says SNAP will be partially funded after judges’ rulings

SUMMARY: President Donald Trump’s administration said that it will partially fund SNAP after a pair of judges’ rulings required it to keep the food aid program running. The U.S. Department of Agriculture had planned to freeze payments to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program starting Nov. 1 because it said it could no longer keep funding it due to the shutdown. The program serves about 1 in 8 Americans and is a major piece of the nation’s social safety net. It’s not clear how much beneficiaries will receive, nor how quickly beneficiaries will see value show up on the debit cards they use to buy groceries.

US--FEDERAL ENFORCEMENT-WHAT TO KNOW

Hearings focus on National Guard deployments in the nation’s capital and Memphis, Tennessee

SUMMARY: Hearings are taking place in two states over the deployment of the National Guard as part of President Donald Trump’s crime-fighting efforts. In Nashville, Tennessee, a hearing Monday focused on National Guard deployment to Memphis. Gun-carrying Guard members have been patrolling neighborhoods and commercial areas of Memphis since early October. Officials have said the Guard members have no arrest power. A judge will issue a written ruling. In Charleston, West Virginia, a state judge briefly heard arguments Monday in a civic group’s lawsuit over the deployment of Guard members to the nation’s capital. The hearing will resume Nov. 10. Lawyers for the state have been asked to focus on whether what Morrisey did was lawful.

US--GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN-FLIGHTS-EXPLAINER

What to do if your flight is delayed or canceled during the US government shutdown

SUMMARY: The U.S. government shutdown has now dragged on for over a month, and shortages of air traffic controllers are straining operations — with flight disruptions piling up nationwide. The situation may well get worse the longer the shutdown goes and workers go without a paycheck. And there is no way to predict what airports might have problems on any given day. So be sure to check your flight’s status before you head to the airport. If your flight is canceled, airlines will rebook you on a later flight. If you no longer want to take the trip, you should be able to get a refund. But each airline’s policies can differ, and airlines are not required to pay cash compensation.

US--MICHIGAN-HALLOWEEN PLOT

Two men accused of plotting terror attacks at LGBTQ+ bars in the Detroit area

SUMMARY: Two men have been charged with terrorism-related crimes in the Detroit area after federal authorities made arrests and seized a cache of weapons last week in a storage unit and elsewhere. According to a 72-page criminal complaint unsealed in federal court, the men had scouted LGBTQ+ bars in Ferndale, a Detroit suburb. FBI Director Kash Patel had announced arrests Friday, but no other details were released at the time while agents searched a home in Dearborn and a storage unit in Inkster. The court filing says the two men who were charged and other co-conspirators were inspired by the Islamic State group’s extremism.

US--GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN-FOOD AID

Trump administration says SNAP will be partially funded in November

SUMMARY: President Donald Trump’s administration says it will partially fund the SNAP food aid program in November after two federal judges required the payments to continue. That means grocery aid will resume for 1 in 8 Americans, though it has been delayed for millions already and the amount beneficiaries receive will be reduced. The U.S. Department of Agriculture earlier said it would not continue the funding in November due to the government shutdown. Two federal judges ruled last week that the government was required to keep the program running. But both gave the administration leeway to pay for it entirely or partially. It can take up to two weeks to load beneficiaries’ debit cards.

US--ELECTION 2025

Trump’s strength, Democrats’ message and the shutdown effect. What to watch on Election Day 2025

SUMMARY: Voters head to polls Tuesday in America’s first major election day since President Donald Trump returned to the White House. The Republican president did not hit the campaign trail to help his party’s candidates or causes. But his leadership and policies dominated the debate virtually everywhere. No contests are bigger than governor’s races in New Jersey and Virginia, the only two this year. The GOP candidates in both states closely aligned themselves with Trump. Strong Democratic showings could provide the party a pathway back to national relevance — even if its top candidates have taken very different approaches.

US--ELECTION 2025-NYC MAYOR

Mamdani and Cuomo face off as New York City chooses new mayor, while Sliwa hopes for an upset

SUMMARY: New York City voters are choosing their next mayor, as Zohran Mamdani faces former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in a generational battle between Democrats while Republican Curtis Sliwa tries to land a massive upset. A victory for Mamdani in Tuesday’s election would give the city its first Muslim mayor and its youngest leader in generations, while giving his brand of economic populism one of the most visible political perches in America. If Cuomo wins, he will have staged a remarkable political comeback after resigning as governor over a barrage of sexual harassment allegations four years ago. Sliwa faces tough odds as a Republican in a heavily Democratic city. Polls close at 9 p.m.

US--CHINA-UNITED STATES-G2 SENSITIVITY

G2 or not G2: Trump’s new favorite term for US-China relations carries a lot of history’s baggage

SUMMARY: President Donald Trump has suggested his outlook to the U.S.-China relationship with a six-word post on Truth Social. He mentioned the “G2,” a term suggesting equal power between the U.S. and China, before a summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping on Oct. 30 in Busan, South Korea. This term, first proposed in 2005, has come to imply a power balance that Beijing desires. Experts say this could delight China but worry U.S. allies, especially those in the Indo-Pacific region. Chinese commentators noted the term’s use, suggesting a move toward a bipolar world. The concept was once explored but later discredited by Washington.

US--ELECTION 2025-GOVERNORS

Republicans seek to tap into Trump energy on eve of Election Day in New Jersey, Virginia

SUMMARY: New Jersey Republicans are trying to ride the coattails of President Donald Trump’s 2024 electoral momentum. Gubernatorial candidate Jack Ciattarelli and Virginia candidate Winsome Earle-Sears are crisscrossing their respective states, while Trump spoke at telephone rallies with voters Monday. This comes after their Democratic opponents Mikie Sherrill and Abigail Spanberger campaigned over the weekend alongside former President Barack Obama. Ciattarelli spent time Monday courting voters in a key traditionally Democratic stronghold that contributed to Trump’s gains in New Jersey. It’s a delicate balance for Republicans, who want to catch some of Trump’s electoral energy while not dismissing concerns about increasing costs.

US--MEDIA-60 MINUTES-EXPLAINER

Anatomy of a news story: ’60 Minutes’ invites audience into the editing process with Trump interview

SUMMARY: CBS News’ “60 Minutes” gave its audience a rare opportunity by releasing a full, unedited video and transcript of its interview with President Donald Trump. The edited interview ran for 28 minutes on the broadcast Sunday. When Norah O’Donnell sat down with the president last Friday for the taping, the full interview ran for 73 minutes. Viewers were able to see the choices “60 Minutes” made in editing for newsworthiness and clarity and to avoid repetition. While it’s a transparency that some welcomed, critics say it could also open up journalists to repeated arguments about the choices they make in crafting stories.
