An East Lothian woman was admitted to hospital after mysteriously becoming hot and struggling to breathe normally.

Lena Russell, from Musselburgh , was cleaning the dishes in her socks when she turned to walk to her living room only to feel a sharp pain on the bottom of her foot.

At first she thought she had stood on a stone, but she later discovered a small spider beneath the arch of her foot at around 9.30pm on Monday November 3.

Within a matter of hours her foot had become swollen to such an extent she was unable to put her shoes on.

Lena described the pain lasting longer than expected while she broke out in hot sweats which led her to call 101.

After describing how her whole body had become hot and her breathing laboured, she was told to go into the Royal Infirmary where a nurse
