Polls have opened and voters in Metro Detroit and Michigan communities will choose mayors, city council members, and key measures in Tuesday's general election.
The polls close at 8 p.m.
In Michigan's largest city, Detroit, voters decide whether Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield or the Rev. Solomon Kinloch Jr. succeeds Mayor Mike Duggan. If Sheffield wins, she would be the city's first female mayor .
Last month, city officials said free bus rides will be offered in Detroit all day on Tuesday to encourage people to vote in the election. Buses operated by the Detroit Department of Transportation and regional SMART buses with routes through the city will be free.
