When Rahul Gandhi cast his fishing net in Bihar recently, he might not have imagined the political storm it would stir. What was intended as a symbolic outreach to the Nishad (boatmen) community soon turned into a national talking point, and not necessarily in Congress’s favour.

“Rahul Gandhi’s job is to ride motorcycles and spread pollution. He’ll spend his entire life catching fish while the country sinks into darkness. He should have been a cook — frying jalebis and catching fish — not a politician,” said Janshakti Janata Dal leader Tej Pratap Yadav.

BJP MP Ravi Kishan took a similar swipe. “The number of fish he caught yesterday will be more than the votes he gets. Well, at least his swimming style was good. We are busy catching votes while he’s busy catching fish,” he remarked.
