Arsenal will take on Slavia Prague in the Champions League on Tuesday without the services of forward Viktor Gyökeres.
After he opened the scoring, the Swedish striker was taken off at halftime of his side’s 2-0 win over Burnley on Saturday.
After the game, Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta said that the 27-year-old had suffered a muscle injury.
On Monday, Arteta delivered a concerning update that implied Gyökeres could be out for a long spell.
“No, he’s definitely not available [against Slavia]," Arteta said. "He hasn’t trained today and we need to do some more tests and scans in the next few days to understand the extent of the injury."
Asked the injury was likely to be short term, Arteta said: “No, I am concerned because he hasn’t had many muscular issues, and he had to leave the pitch, and he was feeling something, and that’s obviously never a good sign, especially for a player that is very, very explosive.
“We are digging in a little bit more to understand where we are in terms of the injury and we’ll announce the moment we know more."
Mikel Merino replaced Gyökeres at Turf Moor on Saturday and the Spain international could be set to start against Slavia. Merino has been successful in the past when playing as a makeshift striker for the Gunners, scoring four goals in six league games last year during an injury crisis at forward.
Gyökeres has scored six times for Arsenal, including four in the Premier League, after he completed a move from Sporting CP this summer worth a reported €63.5 million plus €10m in add-ons.
The Swede joins a long list of injured Arsenal attackers, including Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus, Noni Madueke, Martin Ødegaard and Gabriel Martinelli.
Even with the injuries, Arsenal enters Tuesday's game on a nine-match win streak.
Arteta's side currently tops the Premier League table by six points, and has also started the Champions League with three wins from three, scoring eight goals and conceding zero.
