The Gilbert Public Schools Governing Board reviewed proposed updates Oct. 28 to the district’s policy on patriotic observances, which would add new state-mandated civics education days.

Superintendent Dr. Shane McCord introduced the revisions to Policy 5-201, currently titled “Flag Display, U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights, Moment of Silence, Declaration of Independence.” The proposed new title would be “Patriotic Exercises and Observance Days.”

The revised policy adds two new commemorative days required under Arizona law.

The first one is 9/11 Education Day, which will occur each Sept. 11. The district shall provide age-appropriate instruction for grades seven through 12 on the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, on that day.
