Construction began last week to beautify the walkway at Elizabeth Blume-Silverstein Plaza, one of the main plazas at Rutgers University–Newark, and to honor one of New Jersey's most accomplished women lawyers.
The plaza is between University Avenue and Washington Street.
Blume-Silverstein graduated in 1911 from New Jersey Law School, which would later become Rutgers Law School. She was a suffragette and one of the first women to practice law in Essex County.
“She fought beautifully on her feet as a lawyer,” said Nathan Royce Silverstein, her son, a 1964 Rutgers Law School alumnus and a philanthropist who is funding the renovation. “It’s a very nice honor, (and) it keeps her memory alive.”
New entrances will be created – one between Ackerson Hall and Engelhard Hall, and another between
