LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - The Michigan Supreme Court and the Board of Law Examiners (BLE) announced that Michigan bar applicants will take a new version of the bar exam beginning in July 2028.

The new test, called the NextGen Uniform Bar Exam (UBE), will replace the current version, known as the Legacy UBE.

The NextGen UBE is being developed by the National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE), which currently provides bar exam content for 54 of the 56 U.S. jurisdictions.

The updated exam will assess knowledge in nine areas of legal doctrine:

Civil procedure

Contract law

Evidence

Torts

Business associations

Constitutional law

Criminal law

Real property

Family law

The NextGen UBE will also evaluate seven foundational lawyering skills:

Legal research

Legal writing

Issue spotting
