Voters in Elmore County are deciding whether to approve a tax referendum for various improvements throughout the county.

The Enhance Elmore tax plan is expected to generate $4.5 million per year to build a new jail, increase funding for volunteer fire departments and fund infrastructure improvements, like new roads and bridges.

If passed, it would collect a $25 flat assessment on landowners, $150 on homeowners and $300 on business owners annually.

“Nobody wants to pay more tax. I personally don’t want to pay more tax,” Elmore County Commission Chairman Burt Mercer told Action 8 News. “But just like in your household, things cost more money.
