The red poppy has become a symbol of remembrance in Canada, but it also serves another important purpose. Each poppy handed out during the annual campaign helps raise money for veterans and their families.

Behind every poppy worn in November are stories of service and sacrifice, a reminder of the people who stood for Canada, both at home and overseas.

“Some of our veterans don’t have that physical capacity, or mental capacity, to volunteer, and some of our veterans also don’t even consider themselves veterans. There is a large group that say, ‘Well, I didn’t fight in a war, so I’m not a veteran, and that’s not true at all,” explained Ret.
