Close to a dozen people die each year in Ontario from carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, with the majority of incidents occurring in homes.
As of Jan. 1, new regulations will require CO alarms to be installed adjacent to every sleeping area and on every storey of residential buildings, including houses, apartments, townhomes, cottages, and other dwellings where fuel-burning appliances, fireplaces or attached garages are present. These changes expand upon the existing building code and aim to prevent further preventable injuries and deaths.
