BEAUMONT, Texas — Opening statements delivered Tuesday morning spell out what a jury picked yesterday is expected to hear and see in the trial of a Port Arthur man accused of stabbing one man and assaulting another in a dispute over a damaged fence.

Prosecutor Jimmy Hamm told the jury that they will hear that everyone involved lives "on the fringe of society," making it difficult sometimes to find people involved in such crimes. Hamm said during the trial they will hear that everything started when a maintenance man confronted the defendant, Gabriel Jones, about damage to a fence. He said the first assault involved Mr. Jones attacking the maintenance man with a chair, resulting in bodily injury. The maintenance man called 911 after the attack.
