MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Hundreds of Black farmers across the country gathered in Whitehaven on Tuesday to talk about a court appeal.
It comes after the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that heirs of Black farmers cannot file legacy claims for the $2.2B from the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act.
The group says the ruling violates the Civil Rights Act.
The president of Black Farmers and Agriculturalists Association, Thomas Burrell, says the Civil Rights Act of 1866 gives African Americans the right to inherit property and generational wealth.
Last summer, the USDA paid $2.2B to Black farmers who faced discrimination from the agency in the past.
However, Burrell said that wasn’t enough money and should have included heirs, so BFFA sued the government.
