A small gathering of neighbors and community organizers on Sunday, Nov. 2 honored people who died in immigration custody or during raids.

In August, a daylaborer named Carlos Roberto Montoya Valdez was fatally struck after he fled the Monrovia Home Depot, running onto the nearby 210 Freeway to avoid Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), National Day Laborer Organizing Network officials said.

Valdez, who was from Guatemala, was one of dozens of people honored on Day of the Dead at a Home Depot in Monrovia, all “victims of ICE,” community members said.

The Monrovia vigil included dozens of crosses, most of them with photos of those who passed in ICE custody or during raids. Candles surrounded the crosses, with marigold flowers and petals spread throughout.
