A 28-year-old man was arrested and charged with aggravated assault after his girlfriend was shot during an altercation at an apartment on Wellington Crescent, Winnipeg police say.
Shortly after 2 a.m. on Sunday, the man allegedly "produced a handgun which discharged" and struck his 25-year-old girlfriend at close range, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Tuesday.
The woman was seriously injured but escaped the building and waved down members of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service who were in the area and who gave her emergency medical care, police said.
She was taken to hospital in critical condition with what police called a "life-altering injury" and is still hospitalized.
