LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - The Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) announced that more than 900 illegally possessed firearms have been taken off the streets through the Operation Safe Neighborhoods program.
The statewide initiative, launched in 2022, aims to reduce gun violence by targeting parolees and probationers who are prohibited by law from possessing firearms.
Searches and compliance checks focus primarily on high-risk individuals, including those with a history of gun-related crimes.
Currently, MDOC employs about 1,000 parole and probation agents who supervise approximately 40,500 parolees and probationers across the state.
