GRAND FORKS – Former Grand Forks Public Schools student and current transition liaison Sara Berg has received the 2025 McKinney-Vento Liaison of the Year award for her work with homeless youth.

The National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth held its annual conference on Monday, during which Berg was presented with the national award. She said she was shocked and that there were “lots of tears” when she found out she had won.

“I'm extremely grateful,” she said. “You do it because the work is so rewarding in itself, and for somebody to recognize what you're doing, it was amazing.”

The McKinney-Vento Act is a federal law, passed in 1982, that ensures homeless youth do not experience additional barriers gaining access to education. Berg supports homeless students
