Mandurah’s Bindjareb Noongar community has welcomed a $5 million investment into the Peel Harvey Estuary and surrounding waterways.
The Cook Government fulfilled an election commitment last week when it announced a $3.7m funding boost for the Peel Development Commission for projects to be delivered through the Peel-Harvey Catchment Council.
The council will use the funding to revegetate 142ha of land along the Waangaamaap Bilya (Serpentine River); install fencing to exclude livestock and pests; reintroduce habitat to support native fish, mussels and rakali; launch an education program for local schools; and support groups involved in river and estuary restoration.
The traditional owners will receive an additional $1.3m to drive Bindjareb-led actions under the Bindjareb Djilba Protection
