A labour of love and tears came to fruition for members of the Schoonderwoerd and Terpstra families of West Perth, four-and-a-half years after the darkest day of their collective lives.

The families came together on Saturday, Nov. 1, to officially open a memorial outdoor rink under the Tim Hortons Pavilion in Keterson Park in Mitchell in honour of Carter Schoonderwoerd, who took his own life in June of 2021. He was 19.

More than 120 people attended the brief ceremony and ribbon-cutting, a testament to the cause not only for Carter’s family, but the community as well, said his dad, Joe.

“It’s not just our cause, but the community’s as well,” he said. “It shows they are behind it.”
