A British rail worker left seriously injured during a mass stabbing on a train has been hailed a hero for saving multiple lives.

Samir Zitouni, 48, stepped in to shield passengers last Saturday when the horrifying knife attack unfolded on the London-bound train.

Zitouni, a customer host, remains "critically unwell" but stable in hospital, British Transport Police said. Three other people remain stable in hospital.

His family said in a statement they were " immensely proud of Sam and his courage".

"We have been deeply touched by the outpouring of love and kindness shown to Sam, and by the many well wishes for his recovery," they said.

"The police called him a hero on Saturday evening, but to us he's always been a hero."
