The Co-Operative Care Centre has cleared one hurdle toward keeping its doors open through the winter months.

In a tense United Counties of Leeds and Grenville joint services committee (JSC) meeting, the committee decided to recommend a funding extension to March 31.

“I’m very relieved and I believe it won on its merits,” said Tony Barnes, treasurer of the Brockville Housing Partnership, which runs the centre. “It seemed to have a fair bit of support around the table. Now, the work with the Counties staff begins on how we’ll transition to the post-March 31 date.”

With protesters gathering outside the municipal offices and about 40 members of the public in the gallery for the meeting, all eyes were on the region’s mayors as they discussed the options.
