WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) - They’ve been around since 1793, but soon they’ll be a thing of the past. The making of pennies is at an end.
At Watertown Savings Bank, Executive Vice President of Branch Administration Terri Erdner is helping get the word out to its business customers.
“We’ve been able to stay flush with coin, but some banks haven’t been. Therefore, when their commercial customers come in, they may not be able to purchase pennies to take back to their stores,” she said.
The change could cause businesses to change their pricing, as a Congressional bill could require cash sales to be rounded to the nearest nickel.
At Cam’s Pizzeria in downtown Watertown, the majority of the dough that comes in isn’t cash.
