LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Kentucky and community leaders gathered Tuesday morning to discuss the cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and how people can help.
First Lady Britainy Beshear, Lt. Gov. Jacqueline Coleman, Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) Superintendent Brian Yearwood and Dare to Care President and CEO Vincent James gathered at Dare to Care's food bank on Fern Valley Road.
"Our students are hurting," Superintendent Brian Yearwood said during the news conference. "Especially when they come in on a Monday morning for that free breakfast, you can see them making up for lost time."
Hunger is not an abstract concept for them but a lived experience, the superintendent said.
The district gives out over 100,000 meals each day to students, Yearwood said.
