DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) - November’s Beaver Moon is lighting up the night sky as the closest and brightest moon of the year.

The phenomenon is called a supermoon because it happens when the moon’s orbit brings it closest to Earth during a full phase. This one gets its name from folklore, marking the time beavers build dams before winter.

“It’s about 30% brighter than your average full moon,” said Robert Mitchell, professor of astronomy at St. Ambrose University.

The moon will appear about 14% larger, sitting only about 221,000 miles from Earth, NASA said.
