The San Diego Padres' starting pitching situation was already looking dire headed into next season, but Yu Darvish's announcement on Tuesday further complicates matters.

Right-handers Dylan Cease and Michael King are both headed to free agency this week, leaving Nick Pivetta as the lone qualified starter guaranteed to return to the staff. But had Darvish been ready to throw a full season, the Padres could have been prepared to replace some of the innings they were losing.

Instead, Darvish told the world that unfortunately for him, he won't be able to throw a single pitch until 2027.
