Public safety cannot be managed from hundreds of kilometres away, said Témiscaming Mayor Alain Gauthier.

Gauthier was responding to news that the local police station in Témiscaming, Quebec could close.

Quebec provincial police is looking to close a dozen police stations as a cost-saving measure to address a $120 million budget shortfall.

“Local realities must be considered in every decision that affects the safety of our citizens,” Gauthier stated in a media release.

“The loss of our officers’ community involvement and the reduction of prevention efforts would be an immeasurable loss. It would be a short-sighted saving,” he said.

Gauthier said as a border town and gateway to Quebec from Ontario, Témiscaming occupies a strategic position in terms of public safety.
