Some teams got better before Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline.

The Detroit Lions did not.

As NFC contenders made moves around them, general manager Brad Holmes was idle. Whether that was the plan or not remains to be known, but in any case, the clock struck 4 without the Lions making a single move to supplement the roster for a Super Bowl run.

While nobody expected Detroit to make a move like the Indianapolis Colts, who traded two first-round picks to the New York Jets for star cornerback Sauce Gardne r, the performance of the Lions’ offensive line in Sunday’s loss to the Vikings — and the numerous injuries that occured — made it clear that this team still had serious work to do before it could feel comfortable standing toe-to-toe with a contender.
