As temperatures remain co-operative — for now — city council has found $1 million to quickly find and fund day shelter spaces with hopes of giving people a safe place to stay warm during the harsh Edmonton winter.

Following an hour-long debate spurred by a motion without customary notice by Mayor Andrew Knack on Monday, councillors voted unanimously to direct city administration to “work with social sector partners to improve and expand access to emergency day shelters and dedicated day shelter spaces for the winter of 2025-2026 with $1 million in one time funding” allocating the 2026 community safety and well-being fund to bolster the number of day shelters available.
