For just over 50 years, guitarist Billy Gibbons, bassist Dusty Hill, and drummer Frank Beard (ironically the one without a beard) played the kind of biker beloved bar room blues rock that doesn’t equal mainstream stardom. For them, it did. The only explanation that makes sense is that they were just that good at it. ZZ Top were the odd men out, and yet also oddly perfect for the nascent, new wave and pop obsessed MTV. In 2021 Hill passed away after they set the Guinness Book record for longest active run with no line-up changes. According to his wishes, longtime ZZ Top guitar tech, Elwood Francis, stepped in, and the show goes on.
