BANGOR, Maine — Tempers continue to flare at Bangor City Council meetings. The latest altercation led to the third censure of Councilor Joseph Leonard after a heated reaction to racist remarks made during public comment.
During the meeting, an anonymous speaker attending via Zoom urged attendees to vote for council candidate, Richard Ward, who is known for promoting white supremacy and Neo-Nazism.
The speaker then went on to thank Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, for “protecting our white communities,” referred to immigrants as “savages,” and finished with the phrase “white f—king power.”
This rhetoric prompting Leonard to throw a pen and make an obscene hand gesture in response. He also interrupted Council Chair Rick Fournier to address the hate speech directly.
