CLEVELAND, Ohio — A mass shooting that injured nine people at an Airbnb rental in Bath Township has intensified scrutiny of short-term rental properties and their use for large parties, a problem that communities across Northeast Ohio have struggled to contain.

Authorities said the Sunday shooting occurred during a birthday party promoted on social media at a home on Top-of-the-Hill Drive. The property was rented through Airbnb despite Bath Township’s zoning prohibiting short-term rentals.

Officials acknowledged enforcement is difficult because violations are civil, not criminal, leaving few tools to prevent gatherings that can spiral out of control.

The incident echoes years of complaints about “party houses” disrupting neighborhoods and prompting calls for tighter regulations.
