The Dallas County Commissioners Court unanimously approved a $1 million grant Tuesday to the North Texas Food Bank to support emergency relief during the ongoing federal government shutdown.

The funding will help the food bank purchase more items to fill “family relief boxes,” which include a mix of pantry staples and a bag of produce. The boxes are intended for furloughed federal employees and the 404,000 Dallas County residents who rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP.

North Texas Food Bank CEO Trisha Cunningham told NBC 5 that SNAP funding typically provides $81 million in services each month across the nonprofit’s 12-county service area—$56 million of that in Dallas County alone. The county has the fifth-highest food insecurity rate in the country, she said.
