UPPER MARLBORO, Md. — Prince George’s County Councilmembers gathered on Tuesday to pass legislation they say is crucial to making sure every resident can eat a healthy meal, and recognizes food as healthcare.
“The number one killer in Prince George’s County isn’t gun violence, it’s heart disease,” said Wala Blegay, the legislation’s lead sponsor.
The Food as Medicine Health Program Act sets up a program within the County’s Health Department to improve health outcomes and address food insecurity by providing access to healthy food.
It also provides nutrition counseling, prescriptions for produce, and medically tailored meals.
Isaac Zama watched on as the Council voted for the program.
