CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The Great Pumpkin Smash is returning to McIntire Recycling Center, giving people an ecologically friendly way to dispose of pumpkins with Halloween over and done for another year.
"This is our eighth year of actually hosting the Great Pumpkin Smash, and it's an opportunity for residents in the area here in Charlottesville and Albemarle County to recycle their pumpkins. So they can bring them down to us at the McIntire Recycling Center, we collect them all up, then we ship them off to be turned into compost. By composting the pumpkins, we're able to return those nutrients back to the soils and keep sort of all of those resources local," said Westley Kern, c ommunication & outreach coordinator at Rivanna Solid Waste Authority.
