Tobacconists could soon be raided and forcibly closed as a tobacco and vape crackdown begins.

Stores that sell illicit tobacco, illegal vaping products or sell tobacco without a licence can be shut down immediately for 90 days under new NSW Health's new powers.

If a breach is found, these establishments can be forced to close for up to 12 months.

Two stores at St Leonards in Sydney's lower north have already fallen victim to these changes.

While issuing closure orders during the raid on Tuesday, NSW Health inspectors seized 3860 illicit cigarettes and 224 illegal vapes at both shops.

"If you're doing the wrong thing, sooner or later we will come for you," NSW Health Minister Ryan Park said.
