ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – It's been nearly 50 years since that detective Greg MacAleese created what would change a big part of the way police tracked down criminals.
An anonymous tip line, letting anyone report crime without fear of retaliation, "Anonymity is absolutely the cornerstone for the success of the program," explained the Founder of Crime Stoppers, Greg MacAleese, in an exclusive interview in August of 2002.
Since 1976, 'Crime Stoppers' has solicited anonymous tips, then paying those witnesses small rewards if that information leads to an arrest.
"It comes in anonymously. You get a number, and that's all. We'll never know who you are. We don't want to know who you are. We just want to get that crime resolved," said Tim Sheahan, Chairman of the Albuquerque Metro Crime Stopper
