RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Democrat Abigail Spanberger will be the next governor for the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Spanberger, 46, will be the first woman to serve as governor of Virginia.
ELECTION RESULTS | INTERACTIVE MAPS
She first served in Virginia’s seventh district in the U.S. House of Delegates. She was the first Democrat to serve in the seventh district in more than fifty years.
Spanberger will succeed Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin, who is not allowed to run for a second consecutive term. Her victory aligns with recent voting patterns in Virginia, which picks its governors the year after a presidential election and tends to elect someone of the opposite party of the president.
The inauguration will be Saturday, Jan. 17.
