Pharrel Payne put up 21 points with six rebounds, freshman Darius Adams scored 10 of his 16 points at the foul line and Maryland tipped off its season with an 83-61 win over Coppin State in the Naismith Hall of Fame Series on Monday in Baltimore.
Maryland saw its lead whittled down to as few as seven points in the early stages of the second half, but a late 22-2 run sealed the result in Buzz Williams' first game as Maryland's coach.
Payne was one of four Texas A&M players to follow Williams to Maryland, and he went 6 of 8 from the floor and 9 of 9 from the free-throw line. Andre Mills, who redshirted for the Aggies last year, poured in 13 points with three 3-pointers in his Terrapins debut, as did David Coit.
