A day after Mayor-elect Soraya Martinez Ferrada called an emergency meeting over Montreal’s transit labour disruption, talks between the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) and its 2,400 striking maintenance workers remain stalled.
In a statement Tuesday evening, the Syndicat du transport de Montréal–CSN said two meetings had been held since Monday, citing “progress” in reaching a deal, but added that major issues remain unresolved.
“It seems the STM is not budging and still wants to open the door wide to outsourcing,” said union president Bruno Jeannotte. “The STM would rather see its services shut down than reach an agreement with us. Outsourcing repairs and parts manufacturing will only raise costs and cause more breakdowns. That’s not what public transit needs.”
