No. 1 Purdue got off to a relatively slow start against Evansville in its season-opener Tuesday.

Then, Fletcher Loyer got going.

The senior out of Homestead poured in a career-high 30 points and went 7 of 10 from 3-point range to lead the Boilermakers to a 82-51 victory in front of a sold-out crowd of 14,684 at Mackey Arena.

Loyer averaged 20 points in his four season-openers at Purdue.

Purdue was without preseason All-American forward Trey Kaufman-Renn, who was dealing with a minor hip injury sustained in practice in recent days. Redshirt freshman Jack Benter, a Brownstown native, started in Kaufman-Renn's place in his Boilermakers debut and scored 11 points to go with six rebounds.

Boilers point guard Braden Smith dished 11 assists against one turnover to get Purdue's offense going.
