President Donald Trump now wants to make it harder for the most vulnerable, including those older Americans over age 50, to receive Social Security Disability benefits (“ Trump plan would limit disability benefits for older Americans ,” Nov. 2). The practice has been to consider age in determining disability, but the proposal is now to exclude it.
That means a 55-year-old laborer with ailments typical of that age would be considered able to do the same work as a 35-year-old person with no impairments. As one gets older, the ability to engage in heavy physical labor decreases, depending on their physical condition.
The fraud rate in Social Security is less than 1% , yet the president who vowed not to touch Social Security is taking steps to deny deserving disabled workers the benefits
