Despite running a scandalous campaign, Democrat Jay Jones is projected to top incumbent Republican Jason Miyares in what has been a contentious attorney general's race in Virginia.
With 105 of 133 localities reporting as of 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 4 Jones was holding a narrow lead, with 51.75 percent of the vote versus Miyares' 47.83 percent, with more results coming in.
Decision Desk HQ called the race for Jones as of 8:26 p.m. on Tuesday night.
Jones has come under fire in recent weeks when he was caught sending questionable text messages about murdering a political rival, though his poll numbers have continued to surge in the days leading up to Election Day.
He would be the first Black Attorney General in Virginia.
If the projection holds, Jones will be the third Democrat to win a hotly contested election in Virginia, joining new governor-elect Abigail Spanberger and lieutenant governor–elect Ghazala Hashmi.
