A high stakes and tumultuous New York City mayoral election comes to an end this evening, with polls across the five boroughs closing at 9 pm.
Going into the final day, most polls showed Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani in the lead, with independent candidate Andrew Cuomo in second place. Over the last several days, Cuomo has targeted conservatives and Republican voters in an effort to close the gap by taking votes from GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa.
Interest in the race has been extraordinarily high, with more than 735,000 voters casting ballots during early voting .
