Abigail Spanberger has won the Virginia governorship for the Democrats, flipping a populous state back to the party after four years of Republican rule in one of a string of Tuesday elections that could define the opposition to U.S. President Donald Trump .
Ms. Spanberger’s victory was projected by U.S. networks within an hour of the polls closing, as returns showed her holding a lead of nearly 10 percentage points. The result could see the state get in on the gerrymandering push kicked off by Mr. Trump.
