WASHINGTON —

Former Vice President Dick Cheney, who became one of the most powerful and polarizing figures under President George W. Bush, has died at the age of 84 due to complications from pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease, according to a statement from his family.

"For decades, Dick Cheney served our nation, including as White House Chief of Staff, Wyoming's Congressman, Secretary of Defense, and Vice President of the United States," the statement said.

After Cheney left office, he became a target of President Donald Trump's. In recent years, Cheney became a defender of his daughter, Liz Cheney, who was a leading critic of Trump's actions after the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection on the U.S. Capitol.
