FORKS, Wash. — A small coastal community on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula is mourning the loss of a father and his young son who died in a fishing accident near Forks — even as loved ones find comfort in a small sign of hope.
Authorities say 35-year-old Christian Akers and his 7-year-old son Wyatt died Thursday when their drift boat capsized in the Bogachiel River, southwest of Forks. A third adult on board was able to cling to a tree and call 911. Rescuers pulled both father and son from the water, but neither survived.
Search teams have continued to scour the river and surrounding forest for another missing boater, 39-year-old Alfonso Graham, who remains unaccounted for. On Friday, crews recovered the overturned drift boat. On Monday morning, officials confirmed a piece of good news
