It was wet and soggy at the Flemington Racecourse for the race that stops a nation, but not even the grey skies could keep the onslaught of bright and colourful dresses at bay.

Despite the icy conditions and the grey skies, it didn’t stop the attendees from bringing the heat with bold shades and gravity-defying headwear.

Others encouraged the spring weather, with vibrant floral patterns, shades of blush pink, butter yellow and vibrant red.

Coats and umbrellas stole the spotlight in the morning as the clouds blanketed the skies, but punters were all too ready to strip off the layers as soon as the sun emerged shortly before noon.

All eyes were on Melbourne Cup queen Kate Waterhouse, whose mum, legendary trainer Gai’s horse Vauban ran sixth in the big race.
