Despite its tragedy, Marvel's new Silver Surfer change is the best thing that has happened to the character in decades. Since his debut in 1966, Silver Surfer has remained one of the most philosophically profound characters in the Marvel Universe, having to give up his freedom to help feed Galactus, but doubling his efforts to save billions of innocent lives. Whether he has the comic book trajectory to back up his fame is a different topic.
Fifty-nine years after his introduction, Norrin Radd seemingly dies trying to protect the Earth and its heroes. Norrin's death comes after relentless persecution from a faction of alien-hating humans, to which hunter Kelly Koh belongs. As a final lesson of empathy, Norrin transfers the Power Cosmic to Kelly, making her Marvel's new Silver Surfer.
